I worked for a VP who loved to empower us to get things done. The first time she said it to me, I felt my chest swell and I had confidence we could conquer the world, or at least execute the project. That confidence quickly vanished when I realized we weren’t really empowered. In order to advance the project, we were dependent on other parts of the organization – teams that we had no influence over. Sure, we could have conversations with these groups and attempt to gain buy in, but ultimately, it wouldn’t be enough because the challenges we were facing related back to the priorities that had been set for the entire organization. The Secret Isn’t in the Sauce
I’m not sure why I got a BS in International Business and an MBA in Finance. Almost all the valuable business skills I learned, I learned at Chick-fil-A. When I began looking for a job at 16, I swore I would not work at fast-food. I was determined to find a job at Mervyn’s or another big department store. A friend was working at Chick-fil-A, so my mom decided to pick me up an application. Reluctantly I filled it out. Who Will You Fly?
My trip to St Louis was an adventure to say the least…although there was a lot more waiting involved than I would have expected from an adventure. The trip started out relatively mundanely. I showed up to the airport earlier than anticipated, was thankful to be in Zone-2 boarding versus Zone-3, and had a decent seat. We boarded the plane, and within five minutes we were informed that we had to de-board as there was something wrong with the door. Continue reading
